Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time, she had already made her TV debut on an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her show in 1996.
